Dr. Pradeep Taneja is a specialist in Asian politics and international relations and serves as Deputy Associate Dean (International–India) in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne. He is also a Member of the university’s Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies and an Academic Fellow of the Australia India Institute. In addition, he is a Non-Resident International Fellow at the Delhi Policy Group, a regular contributor to the DPG East Asia Explorer, and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Asian Security and International Affairs. A Mandarin speaker, he lived and worked in China for six years, including two years as a Senior Consultant on an iron and steel industry project supported by the Australian government’s foreign aid agency.
Dr. Taneja’s career spans teaching, research, consultancy, and international academic leadership. He previously served as Chair of Strategy at Shinawatra University in Bangkok and Director of International Programs at La Trobe University’s Graduate School of Management. He has held visiting fellowships at Hong Kong Baptist University, the National University of Singapore, and the Mercator Institute for China Studies in Berlin. His publications include China Since 1978: Reform, Modernisation and Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, co-authored with Colin Mackerras and Graham Young, alongside numerous journal articles and book chapters. His forthcoming work examines Sino-Indian competition in the Indian Ocean and the agency of small island states. He is also a co-editor of the forthcoming Palgrave Handbook on International Peace and Security and frequently comments in Australian and international media on Indo-Pacific affairs.
