Yoshikazu Kato is a Research Fellow at the Rakuten Securities Economic Research Institute and Director of the Trans-Pacific Group. His research and commentary focus on China’s domestic and foreign policy, Japan–China relations, US–China competition, Hong Kong, and the changing strategic landscape of the Asia-Pacific. He previously served as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Asia Global Institute of the University of Hong Kong, a Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard’s Asia Center, and a Visiting Scholar at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.
Kato’s articles and analyses have appeared in leading international publications, including AsiaGlobal Online, the Chinese editions of The New York Times and Financial Times, the South China Morning Post, and Nikkei Asian Review. He is the author of several books on Chinese politics and regional affairs, including Patriotic Slaves, How Xi Jinping Deals with Trump: China’s Global Strategy and Japan’s Choice, and “Beijingnization”: The Destiny of Hong Kong and the National Strategies of the Chinese Communist Party. He also co-authored Rebalance: China, Japan, and the United States in a New Era with Harvard University Professor Ezra Vogel. Through his research, writing, and institutional work, Kato contributes to wider understanding of China’s political evolution and its implications for regional and global affairs.
