Professor Dr. Sanjay K. Bhardwaj is a distinguished scholar of South Asian studies and a senior academic at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He has served as Chairperson of the Centre for South Asian Studies and Director of the Energy Studies Programme. His research focuses on Bangladesh’s socio-economic development, identity politics, foreign relations, India–Bangladesh relations, India’s neighbourhood policy, energy security, and regional and sub-regional cooperation in South Asia. Over more than two decades of teaching and research, he has supervised over 50 doctoral scholars and made significant contributions to the academic study of Bangladesh and contemporary South Asia. He has authored five books and monographs and published more than 50 research papers and articles.
Professor Bhardwaj has received several prestigious international fellowships and awards. He was a Sir Ratan Tata Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2009–10, where he researched contested secular and Islamic identities in Bangladesh. He received the ASIA Fellows Award in 2010–11 for research at the University of Dhaka on water-sharing issues and Bangladeshi perspectives on India. In 2013, he was selected as a Chinese Academy of Social Sciences–ICSSR Fellow to examine China’s South Asia policy. He also participated in the 2018 Study of the United States Institutes Fellowship on national security policymaking at the University of Delaware. Professor Bhardwaj has completed major research projects on India’s energy security, neighbourhood policy, regional cooperation, and identity politics in Bangladesh. Among his notable recent contributions is the edited volume The Chinese Shadow on India’s Eastward Engagement: The Energy Security Dimension, published by Routledge in 2021. Through his scholarship, teaching, and international research engagement, he continues to shape debates on South Asian geopolitics, energy cooperation, identity, and regional diplomacy.
