Jathindra Ariyapala is a Sri Lankan political analyst, commentator, and think tank leader specialising in South Asian geopolitics and the Indo-Pacific. He is the Founding Director of the Trinco Centre for Strategic Studies, an independent institution established in Trincomalee in 2018 to examine strategic issues in South Asia and Sri Lanka’s role in the Indian Ocean. His research focuses on major-power competition, India–Sri Lanka relations, India–China rivalry, post-war political developments, governance, security policy, and the challenge of balancing domestic priorities with external pressures. Through engagement with diplomats, scholars, journalists, and policy practitioners, he brings international perspectives into Sri Lanka’s public discourse. His analyses and interviews have appeared in international outlets including Eurasia Review and South Asia Monitor, as well as Sri Lankan platforms such as Sri Lanka Guardian and Colombo Telegraph.
Alongside his think tank work, Ariyapala has more than two decades of experience in Tamil-language journalism as a columnist and editor. He contributes to a regional newspaper and serves voluntarily as Consultant Editor of Puthiyamurasu.com, a Tamil-language news and analysis platform promoting local debate. He has participated in conferences organised by diaspora communities in Norway and Canada, speaking on post-war development, governance challenges, and the changing dynamics of India–Sri Lanka relations. He also appears regularly on television discussions, talk shows, digital forums, and YouTube channels, where he analyses developments and regional security issues in the local language. An advocate for minority rights and good governance, Ariyapala holds a Master of Arts in Applied Conflict Transformation from Pannasastra University, Cambodia. He is also an alumnus of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program, having joined its 2020 initiative on U.S. Foreign Policy in the Indo-Pacific. His career combines grassroots journalism, strategic research, and international engagement, positioning him as a voice on Sri Lanka and the wider Indo-Pacific.
