Roman Uddin is a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS), Bangladesh, and Editor of Global Up-To-Date, the Centre’s monthly international affairs review. His work brings together policy research, editorial leadership and public dialogue, with a focus on human rights, democratic governance, foreign affairs, diplomacy and geopolitics.
A central strand of his research concerns civic freedoms and the relationship between law, state power and public accountability. He has led research activities on the challenges facing human rights defenders in Bangladesh, as well as on the implications of cyber legislation for freedom of expression, press freedom and journalists’ rights. His work examines legal and institutional constraints alongside the experiences of affected individuals, connecting policy debates with the realities of reporting, defending rights and participating in public life.
He has also contributed to media-based election-monitoring research, examining election-related violence, reported irregularities and news coverage. His wider work on the information environment includes misinformation analysis, fact-checking initiatives and the facilitation of workshops that strengthen journalists’ verification skills. These activities complement his research on independent journalism and democratic accountability.
Through Global Up-To-Date and his wider writing, he addresses international politics, security, human rights, development and the global economy. His foreign affairs commentary explores Bangladesh’s relations with neighboring countries and major powers, regional strategic competition and the role of Track 2 diplomacy. His published analysis also considers international conflict, humanitarian crises and the connections between climate disruption and security.
Roman Uddin writes regularly in English and Bengali for newspapers including New Age, The Daily Ittefaq, Bangladesh Pratidin, Kaler Kantho and Manab Zamin. He has moderated sessions at international conferences, including the Bay of Bengal Conversation, engaging policymakers, legal experts, researchers, journalists and civil society representatives in discussions on public affairs.
His professional background includes experience in national and international nongovernmental organizations, public relations and team leadership in an international law firm. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Dhaka.
